How to report a security issue ?

What kind of abuse should I report to the web hosting provider ?

If you discover a fraudulent domain name or website, you can involve the web hosting provider or the registrar in the following cases :

  • Phishing : Phishing is a way of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public
  • Spam : Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately.
  • Copyright : The fraudster uses files on his website without any right on it.
  • Open Relay : An open mail relay is an SMTP server configured in such a way that it allows anyone on the Internet to send e-mail through it, not just mail destined to or originating from known users.
  • Securityhole : You have discovered a vulnerability in a LWS Server.
  • Virus : The server is compromised by a virus or a malware.
  • Bruteforce : The server is hacked in order to find the password.
  • Botnet : The server is compromised by a malware which allows the attacker to gain complete control over it.

In what cases is the web hosting provider / the registrar not allowed to intervene ?

In some cases, the web host / the registrar can not judge the legitimacy of your request:

  • Cybersquatting : If you only bought your domain name in .fr, and that somebody else buys the same domain name in .com, so the registrar that registered this domain name is not allowed to intervene.
  • Webmaster dispute : If you are the customer of a website creation agency which has created your website and bought the webhosting plan and the domaine, and if this company / this person is registered as the owner of the domain name for you, so the web hosting provider / registrar is not allowed to give you the Username and Password of the control panel.

–> In these two cases, it will be necessary to settle this amicably with the owner of the concerned domain name ( you can find details here: http://whois.domaintools.com if he did not choose any anonymous option ) and then you will have lodge a complaint against him directly.
